MT4 vs MT5 vs cTrader vs broker-built platforms: which one fits your phone?
MT4, MT5, cTrader and broker-built apps all run on Kenyan phones; the differences matter most when you fund from M-Pesa.

MT4 is still the default, but check the broker's own app first
MT4 remains the most widely offered platform, and most Kenyan brokers will hand you an MT4 login without asking questions. It is light, it runs on older Android phones, and the charting is enough for basic day trading. If you already know your way around it, there is little reason to switch just for the sake of it.
The catch is that MT4 is not the only option on the broker's funding page. Many brokers now push their own app harder, because it lets them control the sign-up flow, the deposit screen and the M-Pesa prompt in one place. Before you download anything, open the broker's funding page and see which platforms are actually supported for KES deposits.
A broker-built platform can be simpler for a phone-first trader: fewer menus, a deposit button that talks to M-Pesa, and support that knows the local rail. The trade-off is that you are trusting that broker's own software, and you cannot move the same login to another broker later.
MT5 and cTrader suit different habits, not different skill levels
MT5 looks like MT4 but carries more instruments and a different order system. If you trade only major forex pairs, the extra tools rarely change your day. If you want indices, metals or crypto CFDs from the same login, MT5 is usually the version brokers offer for that.
cTrader is built around order execution and depth of market, and its interface feels cleaner on a touchscreen than either MetaTrader. Traders who scalp the London or New York sessions often prefer it for that reason. It is less universally offered, so check availability before you assume you can use it.
None of these platforms is 'best rated' in the abstract. A platform is only as good as the broker behind it, and the broker is the part you must verify. The CMA publishes its licensees register at cma.or.ke, and that is the list to check before funding anything.
Your phone, your data bundle and EAT session hours decide more than the logo
All four platform types run on Android and iOS, but they do not use data equally. MT4 and MT5 are relatively frugal; cTrader and broker apps with news feeds and video can chew through a bundle during a long session. If you trade on mobile data, test the app for an hour before committing to a full day.
Session hours in East Africa Time shape when you can actually trade. Sydney runs 01:00 to 10:00 EAT, Tokyo 03:00 to 12:00, London 11:00 to 20:00, and New York 16:00 to 01:00. The London and New York overlap, 16:00 to 20:00 EAT, is the busiest window and the one most Kenyan day traders plan around.
That overlap falls in the evening locally, which suits anyone trading after work. It also means your platform needs to stay stable through the busiest hours, not just at lunchtime when you set it up. Log in during the overlap before you judge an app.
Fund from M-Pesa, but confirm the deposit route inside the platform
M-Pesa is the main rail for Kenyan traders, with Airtel Money, bank transfer and card also common. The practical question is whether the platform shows a KES deposit screen with an M-Pesa prompt, or whether you must send money to a paybill and wait for manual credit. The first is faster; the second needs a support ticket if anything goes wrong.
Check the minimum deposit, the withdrawal process and any currency conversion on the broker's funding page, not on a review site. Those numbers change, and only the broker's own page is current. If a figure is not shown, ask support in writing before you send money.
Withdrawals matter as much as deposits. Confirm how long a withdrawal takes back to M-Pesa and whether it goes to the same number you deposited from. If the answer is vague, that is information worth having before you fund, not after.
